Tablets have become one of the most desired gadgets these days. However, the good ones aren't quite within the reach of the masses.{C} To change this scenario, Hong Kong-based iberry has introduced a 7" tablet called the BT07i. What makes this tablet stand out from the rest, is its 1 GHz CPU that is capable of 1080p video playback.

Design And Build Quality
The manufacturer has been generous enough to stuff the retail package with a lot of goodies. It contains the tablet, mini-USB cable, charger, earphones, and a leather cover. Despite being affordable, the device has decent looks. The bezel is too big to my liking, but the back panel has a nice matte finish to it. It not only adds to device's appearance, but also gives it a better grip. The tablet does not creak at any point. Overall, the tablet's build quality is very good, considering its price tag.
 

The 7" touchscreen has pixel dimensions of 800x480. The screen is reasonably bright, but the colours look dull. Like every low cost device, its screen is highly reflective. This becomes more annoying when used outdoors.

The tablet is powered by a 1 GHz CPU and has 512 MB of RAM. Other specs include Wi-Fi, 4 GB internal memory, a microSD card slot, front VGA camera, 3.5 mm jack, USB OTG-enabled mini-USB port, and a 3600 mAh battery. Surprisingly, the main camera and Bluetooth are missing. Since tablet cameras are mostly useless, I think it's actually a good move to reduce the tab's cost.


UI And Performance
The tablet runs the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) with hardly any customisation. The user interface is reasonably snappy, and the touchscreen is good at registering inputs. Although there's a slight lag while navigating through menu, I don't think that's a big issue. On the bright side, the gadget can handle popular Android games decently. Additionally, thanks to its front facing VGA camera and mic you can make video calls  using third party apps such as Fring and Skype.

The onboard browser supports Flash 10.3 and it handled web videos pretty well. However, the browser's page rendering speed is very slow, and can take a few minutes to render script-heavy websites.


Multimedia
The BT07i's sound quality is good, and the bundled earphones are quite loud. Having said that, the earphones are so ugly, that you may not want to wear them in public. Since iberry hasn't bothered customising the software, equaliser settings are missing.

Video playback is one area where the tablet outshines its competitors. This tablet not only plays the 720p videos, but can also handle the 1080p ones. Additionally, it played every format that was thrown at it including the MKV. This is an excellent feat for a gadget that is priced below the 10k mark. What's more, the HDMI port allows you to enjoy movies through your HDTV.


Battery And Verdict
The 3600 mAh battery performs quite well. Under normal use, it managed to keep the device running for about a day. Under heavy use, it can last up to 6 hours, which is quite impressive for an Android-based tablet.

For a price of around Rs. 8000, the device surely manages to give an impressive performance. Its build quality is way better than that of the Spice Tab Mi-720 and Reliance 3G Tab. Therefore, if you're looking for an affordable tablet, iberry's BT07i is the way to go.
