Based on the legendary Wing Commander franchise by Origin and made using the Descent: Freespace 2 engine, Wing Commander Saga is an open-source fan project 10 years in the making. The Darkest Dawn takes place at a time after the Battle of Terra. Mankind is on the brink of losing the war and facing the prospect of extinction at the hands of the savage Kilrathi Empire. Facing a string of defeats, the Terran Confederation has lost all hope. The Kilrathi are making preparations for a final decisive strike to finish off humanity. Faced with a desperate situation, the humans must muster all their courage and camaraderie in order to prevent their seemingly inevitable annihilation. Here are some of the game's features:

  • Over nine hours of voice dialogue.
  • Approximately 70 cut scenes for a total of about 90 minutes of pre-rendered footage (not counting in-flight communications and command briefings).
  • Over 60 voice actors, some of whom are professionals.
  • 221 voice acting roles.
  • 55 missions.
  • Achievements (mission performance is evaluated and rewarded).
  • 90 models created for Saga.

While the download size is 3.3 GB, installation requires 8 GB of space. Here is a promotional video of the game, which was supposedly downloaded more than 50,000 times on the day of its release.
