Mumbai Central Station To Be The First To Get Google’s High-Speed Wi-Fi
Thanks to RailTel things indeed seem to be moving at "high-speed".
Out of all those 400 stations that Google promised to brings Wi-Fi to as early as October, it will be Mumbai’s Mumbai Central Station that will be the first to get it.
According to the Economic Times, a top-level executive from RailTel Corporation stated that the Google will begin work at Mumbai Central station early October and will be geared up to deliver free Wi-Fi to the public by mid-October.
The high-speed Wi-Fi facility will be freely available to passengers and the public in the area for first 30 minutes only. The 30 minutes of free usage is limited to 24-hours. But this coming from Google, means it will deliver. It is said that Wi-Fi speeds will be fast enough to download an entire movie in 4 minutes, so it will be well worth your time.
It’s not clear yet, but usage beyond the initial free minutes will cost passengers and for those who are stuck for long hours at the station, it may be well worth the price if the speeds keep up.
Mumbai Central is a station not just for local trains on Mumbai’s Western line, but also the starting point for many outstation intra-city trains as well.

For those of you who have not heard of RailTel until PM Modi’s recent visit to Silicon Valley, the state-run corporation has been laying and building an Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) networks along railway tracks since 1983. Back then, the set up was only used for internal communication. Google will be utilizing the existing network which has grown in size over time to build its Wi-FI facilities.
Quick Fact: The Railways began building their own communications networks back in the 1970's so as to not be entirely dependent on the Department of Telecom (now BSNL) for control and communications.
