OPPO R5 Gets A RAM Upgrade With The R5s
Everything else remains the same.
Chinese smartphone manufacturer OPPO has finally pushed out an upgrade to its ultra-thin smartphone the R5. The OPPO R5 arrived in India in December last year for a price tag of Rs 30,000; one that now seems exorbitant considering the hardware that you get inside.
Clearly, the R5 is not about hardware but looks. Its slim 4.8 mm bezel is and still remains an engineering masterpiece.
As for the just announced R5s, it comes with just two upgrades over the existing R5. Firstly, the metal clad smartphone gets a dark grey shade. Secondly, there is now 3 GB of RAM paired with that 64-bit, Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset.
As for the complete specs of this slim smartphone:
- We get a 5.2 inch Full HD AMOLED display with a pixel density of 423 PPI
- Inside, there is an octa-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 (64-bit) processor with 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory
- There is a 13 MP Sony Exmor IMX214 BSI sensor on the back, while the front sensor is a 5 MP one with an 83 degree wide-angle lens
- The device comes with the usual radios including 4G LTE/3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and Bluetooth 4.0
- The handset runs Color OS 2.0 UX that is based on Android 4.4 KitKat and is powered by a 2000 mAh battery
Yes, KitKat 4.4 could be a deal breaker for many, but a slim and light smartphone with 3 GB of RAM may actually convince some to go in for it.
As of now the handset is only available in Europe, but it will definitely make it to India, considering that all of the others have arrived out here as well.
OPPO recently announced its Mirror 5 smartphone that comes with a 3D diamond like finish on the back, aimed at fashion conscious buyer. The smartphone has a similar problem in terms of price versus value.
Currently, the R5 retails on Flipkart for Rs 25,000 (approx.) in which case you are better off with a Moto X (2nd generation) which delivers a lot more horsepower under the hood and a lower price tag as well. There is no word on the R5s' pricing details as of now.
