OPPO Launches Its Stylish Mirror 5 In India
Focus is more on design, but the right hardware bits are in there as well.
OPPO has launched the global version of its Mirror 5s smartphone in India. Called the OPPO Mirror 5, the smartphone delivers the same hardware and software experience as the Chinese variant, but cuts down on a few features. But the focus is more than just the hardware, its all about the looks.
Don’t let that Rs 15,990 price tag change your opinion about this mid-range device. While the hardware specs are mostly budget, its the design of this smartphone that will propel it for comparisons with flagship smartphones.
The construction consists of two sheets of glass with a sandwiched metal frame in the middle. No, there are no short cuts here, the stylish glass and metal construction is just 7.65 mm thick and features this multi-faceted rear panel that delivers a 3D diamond-like effect.
So we get that quality was the focus here, but what about the internals?
- We get a 5 inch, qHD (960 x 540 pixels) IPS display instead of a HD one that we saw on the Mirror 5s
- Inside, things remain the same with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage that is expandable
- For the cameras OPPO has included a 8 MP primary sensor on the back and a 5 MP unit for selfies
- We get the usual dual SIM (micro plus nano) connectivity options including an IR port, but excluding 4G bands (3G bands have been confirmed for now, even though the chipset supports 4G ones)
- Powering it all is Android 5.1 Lollipop with a sufficient 2420 mAh battery
The handset will be available in white and blue and for now and it seems to be a product that stands by itself. This is because its rare to find glass and metal construction in the budget range.
Neither can it be compared to the Xiaomi Mi 4i, nor any of the offerings from Motorola. What this phone does come close to is the Mi 4 that features a similar construction but offers a lot more power (Snapdragon 801) for its Rs 14,999 price tag.
So yes, as much as we like this smartphone, OPPO will need to bring down the price for it to make some sense against the competition.
