Google May Face Penalty Of Around $6 Billion In India
The penalty could be levied upon by the fair-trade watchdog CCI for accusing Google of abusing its marketing dominance in some cases.
It looks like the search giant Google could face regulatory concerns in India, similar to what it is facing in some European countries.
To ensure a fair trade amongst companies in India, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has accused Google of abusing its marketing dominance in some cases.
However, the CCI is yet to confirm its findings and based on the results, it is said that heavy financial penalties could be levied upon Google.
According to The Economic Times, The investigations have found Google guilty in one of the cases.
Further going in to this, the investigation arm of the CCI has been probing into the issue ever since 2011 following some allegations and the Commission has reportedly found prima facie evidence against Google.
So, now, as an every-day user of Google services, we may get curious enough to know what these allegations are about.
Well, here's what they are:
- Google favours its own products in search results.
- Discrimination through paid searches.
- Denial of access to content
- Discriminatory and unfair condition levied on AdWords customers.
According to CCI's norms, Google may have to pay a penalty of up to 10% of its three-year annual average turnover which means something near to $6 billion!
The CCI can also pass a “cease and desist” order and recommend to the Central government that a dominant enterprise should be split up.
