Will Xiaomi’s Smart Water Filter Find A Place In Indian Homes?
Puts the ‘smart’ into water filters.

After smartphones and power banks, Xiaomi has now taken a big step into the TV market as well with its Mi TV and Mi Box. But there was another consumer product announced at the event. Its the Mi Water Purifier.
And today, there’s confirmed news that Xiaomi’s ‘smart’ take on the water purifier is coming soon to India. VP of Xiaomi Global, Hugo Barra put out a post on his personal social media page, clearly mentioning that the company wants to bring the Mi Water Purifier to India, soon.
India is a big market for water purifiers. This comes from the fact that clean water is not accessible easily, once you head outside the metro cities.
Xiaomi could be on to something big. And while we are impressed with the Mi TV and the Mi Box and think that they will sell well, this water purifier that can be controlled from your smartphone will also add to their IoT portfolio.
But with the current price of approximately Rs 13,293 (1299 CNY), it will be a pricey option for sure.
India is a market that is flooded with water purifiers that come from local brands. So it will be hard for consumers to switch over from the current sales and service networks that these brands offer.
Xiaomi has a few tricks up its sleeves. You can control and monitor the status of the water quality from your smartphones. More importantly, the filter will alert you about a filter change, on your smartphone as well. Then there is Xiaomi’s claim that the unit will filter water 8 times faster than your standard water purifier, so if you are in a hurry, this one is for you!
Coming to the important bits about such appliances, water filters unlike Xiaomi’s smartphones require regular maintenance. Xiaomi will have to find partners once again to get the job done as parts would need to be replaced every few months.
From what we can tell, Xiaomi’s service with smartphones itself, is not up to the mark. So you will have figure out the details about its service network before taking the plunge.
