Report: OnePlus 2 Will Feature A 1.8 GHz Snapdragon 810 Processor

Considering the number of complaints the first handset had and OnePlus has just got rid off with the latest Cyanogen update; OnePlus wants to take no chances with its OnePlus 2 smartphone.

The Chinese smartphone maker certainly wants to steer clear of the Snapdragon 810’s well known heating problems. Unfortunately for them, they are using that very same chipset that is commonly associated with the word ‘heating’.

OnePlus has now put out a post revealing how it plans to deal with the heat-related (thermal) issues of the Snapdragon 810 chipset and has also revealed why the price of the smartphone will be higher than its  predecessor.

Engineers have made it pretty clear that the chipset does have a heating problem. Unlike Sony’s Xperia Z4 and the LG G Flex 2 that bank on thermal throttling to keep things cool (and obliviously not succeeded) OnePlus seems to have done the smart thing by downclocking the chip altogether.

The upcoming OnePlus 2 according to the engineers from the team will max out at 1.8 GHz (for the 4 x A57 cores of course) letting the chip run a lot cooler compared to its competitors.

This will again work even better with OnePlus’ thermal dissipation techniques:

“Layered on top of these processors is both thermal gel and graphite placed across different areas of the phone. This graphite ensures that heat generated from the processors will dissipate evenly, as opposed to being concentrated and leading to performance issues.”

Obviously it will take a slight performance hit (10%) but at least you won’t have use your brand new OnePlus 2 with mittens on. Anyway Android is not as optimised as iOS when it comes to games; so as long as you have plenty of RAM, users will not notice the 10% difference.

Sony with all its heating issues in the Xperia Z4 (globally the Xperia Z3+) seems to have taken a similar route with the software updates rolling out soon.

Thermal issues aside, the OnePlus post also revealed that the chipset is an expensive high-end option; meaning that it will not come cheap. The post revealed that the OnePlus 2 thanks to new chipset will cost upwards of 322 USD something that was initially expressed by OnePlus, CEO Liu Zuohu.

Good news about all this is that OnePlus users will want to buy a OnePlus 2 post this news. Something that we feel Sony should have focussed on before it became the talk of the town for the same.
