Sony Explains Thought Behind The Xperia Z3+ Name
Future flagship will not use Z4 tag.
Seems like Japan’s Sony has jumped back in the smartphone game. This is more evident from the fact that the electronics giant actually confirmed the presence of a future flagship.
Still then, it was a bit confusing as to why Sony went ahead and rechristened Japan’s Xperia Z4 as Xperia Z3+. So Sony went ahead to gave everyone an explanation for the same.
Sony knows its home market way too well (the Japanese crave flagship devices). This is why it decided that with upgraded hardware, the name upgrade was essential as it would differentiate the smartphone from its successor, the Z3. As for international markets, this was not the same.

In a move that appears to be smarter than what HTC has done (the results of which are evident), Sony added the Z4 as the Z3+ since the Z3 was already enough of a “flagship” in terms of performance, moreover, there was no design change externally (again similar to HTC). So in short it did make sense to tag it with the + moniker.
Sony’s official statement is as follows:
“The main reason for the name difference here (UK) is down to Sony being such a dominant force in the Japanese market [where] consumers crave flagship devices with the latest features as soon as they can be delivered. Xperia Z3 continues to perform well as our flagship device across the rest of the world. To address those customers that would like to have the very latest features and refinements, we have introduced Xperia Z3+ as a premium addition to our existing flagship Z3 series.”
As for future flagships (which is somewhat a different bit of news by itself) Sony confirmed that it would skip on the Z4 tag altogether.

Indeed it is not known if Sony would continue with the ‘Z’ series or switch to a refreshed branding, but for now we can say that the Xperia Z5 is not too far away.
