Microsoft Goes Budget 3G With Its Lumia 640 In India

Seems too expensive for 3G even with its interesting mix of hardware.

Microsoft has announced its budget Lumia 640 Dual SIM smartphone in India for a price tag of Rs 11,999.

With everyone announcing budget LTE smartphones in the Android space, we really wished the 640 was Microsoft's offering for Windows Phone, but that is not the case.

Announced at the MWC 2015, Microsoft has hand-picked the right hardware to keep the pricing right while keeping a tab on how the device performs. Sadly, this will not be a handset that will drive in any Android users to switch to Windows Phone as the hardware seems too outdated for the price tag.

As for the hardware specs of this budget Windows Phone device:

  • We get a 5 inch, HD (1280 x 720 pixels) IPS display with a pixel density of 300 ppi with Gorilla Glass 3 protection
  • Inside, we get treated to a brisk 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor coupled with 1 GB of RAM that now seems to be the minimum hardware requirement
  • Internal storage seems fine at 8 GB but can also be expanded up to 128 GB thanks to a micro SD card slot
  • The camera department delivers with an 8 MP (with an LED flash) on the back while 0.9 MP unit takes care of selfies
  • Regular connectivity options aside we have a dual SIM set up with 3G bands; all of which are fuelled by a 2500 mAh battery

Indeed what matters here is stutter-free performance; and Windows Phone 8.1 with the Lumia Denim package seems more than sufficient, considering the hardware available to pull off the same. Still then, we really wished that this was Microsoft's foray into the budget LTE market.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual SIM will be available for purchase in cyan, orange, black and white at Rs 12,000 starting today.
