Here’s Why Periscope Is Better Than Meerkat

Comes with added polish, but lacks a much needed feature.

 

Twitter has finally delivered its competitor for the whole Meerkat problem. The social network has rolled out its all-new app called Periscope that allows you to do the same stuff that Meerkat can, only better.

Indeed Periscope is not a new product, Twitter wanted it and its co-founder Kayvon Beykpour caved in at about a $100 million; and now we have complete integration with the social network (well somewhat).

But what we have thanks to Twitter is a better UI, and great streaming connectivity, thanks to a stable infrastructure.

Using it is pretty simple. You start a broadcast and your followers get notified and will start showing up at the bottom of your screen.

You can even interact with them during the broadcast (which is a bit annoying) but the good thing indeed is that you can, and do it flawlessly.

Your friends and followers can ‘like’ your broadcast and you will see those feelings emitted at the bottom right corner of your viewfinder in the form of “hearts” (we have no clue why).

What is good, is that you can tweet a link to anyone with a browser and they can view it thanks to the web interface.

The bad part is that all of those comments aren’t tweets, meaning that all of your conversations happen on Periscope itself and will not show up on Twitter. Somehow we wished that this would be a big thing with a product that comes form the social network. The odd part is, that Meerkat being a third-party app allows this.

What Periscope does not allow you to do, is record video horizontally. While we are pretty sure that we are heading towards a future with square photographs (Instagram), we haven't got there yet. So well, we are indeed waiting to see who enables landscape video broadcasts first.

Another good bit about Periscope is that your videos get can be viewed for the next 24 hours (post the broadcast) for those who missed it live. But somehow we feel that they stored on the server than on your phone.

Good thing is that you can choose who you want to broadcast your feed to as well.

So it indeed seems like a great option over Meerkat as of now, but will be even more, if Periscope enables landscape recording.
