After BQ, Meizu Head Hints At Dual-Booting Ubuntu Smartphones
While the news isn’t surprising, we are inquisitive to know where the OS is headed.
Ubuntu recently announced its Ubuntu Touch OS-powered smartphone built by Spanish smartphone manufacturer BQ. While we knew about this partnership in February last year, we did not know where Canonical is headed with its OS and whether it would survive the onslaught of Android.
Today the second manufacturer who signed up to be a hardware partner of Canonical’s Ubuntu Touch OS, seems to be dropping hints.
Meizu head, Heng Zhang states that the mystery to the UFO tag that has been seen all over Weibo these days will be unlocked at the MWC. This could indicate that Flyme (Meizu’s custom Android-based OS) will deliver an update that will allow for a dual-boot system capable of running two mobile operating systems on the same smartphone. So Meizu’s next update could indeed be called Ubuntu Flyme OS (UFO) after all.
While we have seen leaked images of the MX 4 running Ubuntu’s Touch OS, we are unsure about whether it will be, just one handset, or all of them that will be able to run the same.
More importantly, will there be different hardware requirements (a new smartphone) for the Canonical’s offering? Or can anyone with an MX 4 load it up and run the OS.
We will certainly get the answers to all these questions and more, at this year’s exciting MWC that take place in a couple of weeks.
