Android 5.0 Lollipop Finally Shows Up On Google’s OS Distribution Chart

If you thought that the Android Lollipop update process was slow, think again.

 

Seems like the only mobile platform that delivers firmware updates on time is Apple with iOS. Google has released its Android distribution chart, and things seriously do not look good.

The fact that its been months since Google released the final release for Android Lollipop (manufacturers had a release ever since Google I/O) and Android Lollipop has just begun to show up on Google’s Android software break up is just not too inspiring.

Coming from Big G itself, Android Lollipop now proudly runs on just 1.6% of Android devices worldwide. As for the previous version of Android, KitKat seems to be doing much better with 39.7% of devices, while the older versions take up the rest of the chart in smaller parts (which is a cause of concern).

While many may crack up after looking at the chart, it indeed tells us that a majority of Android smartphone owners do own a KitKat device (grown from 39.1% to 39.7% since the last report). This is more so to do with Google’s move of forcing OEMs (thanks to recent changes in its policy) to install the latest version of Android in newly launched handsets.

Still then, you have to keep in mind the method of categorization which is mentioned below:

“Because this data is gathered from the new Google Play Store app, which supports Android 2.2 and above, devices running older versions are not included. However, in August, 2013, versions older than Android 2.2 accounted for about 1% of devices that checked in to Google servers (not those that actually visited Google Play Store).”

So in short, the chart does give us a picture of the software break up on all Android devices (that took about 7 days to acquire). Clearly, Google needs to figure out better ways to distribute its Android OS quicker and faster to Android users.

While manufacturers continue to add more customisations to differentiate their devices, it only makes the whole process of updates even slower.

It makes us wonder, what happens to all those users who are using Android smartphones without the latest security patches and updates?
