Lokmat Joins Forces With Yahoo! For Marathi Content
New web portal offers Marathi content with Yahoo!'s expertise.
Yahoo! India and Lokmat, a leading Marathi daily have announced a partnership to deliver premium Marathi content on the internet via a new web portal, http://lokmat.yahoo.com. Lokmat's original content will be available on this portal with a touch of the expertise from Yahoo!'s experience in the online business. A huge untapped readership is being targeted by this new property because Marathi is the fourth largest spoken language in India.
Yahoo! India Managing Director, Arun Tadanki said about the surging demand for regional content, "At Yahoo!, we aim to make our content relevant for new Internet users coming online from different parts of India. With this association, we aim to expand our existing offering to help Marathi users stay connected to their world in their own language".
Lokmat Joint Managing Director, Rishi Darda further elaborated, "Our partnership will help grow the regional language online audience in India. Yahoo!’s scale and Lokmat’s original content with indepth coverage of Maharashtra will deliver uniquely tailored Marathi language content to the users".
Internet is fast being adopted as the preferred medium for information, communication, and education in smaller towns of India. A 2009 report by I-Cube has also stated that the next wave of digital audience in India will emerge from the non-English speaking population. In recent times, Yahoo! has been struggling to maintain its popularity because of tough competition. It is not surprising that in addition to Marathi, the company is trying to tap the readership of other non-English audience in India by launching sites in six languages including Hindi and Tamil, in collaboration with Dainik Jagran and Dinamalar respectively. We won't have to wait for long to find out whether or not its efforts will come to fruition.
