Sony Announces Xperia sola

Dual-core Android phone features the "floating touch" technology.

Sony Mobile Communications has announced a new member for its refreshed Xperia lineup. The latest entrant is the sola, which looks like an affordable version of the Xperia S. What makes this device special is its floating touch technology that lets you to highlight an onscreen object, by hovering finger over it. At this point, the feature is only implemented in the default web browser, but Sony is confident that developers will take advantage of it.

Similar to most high-end Android phones, the sola is powered by a 1 GHz dual-core CPU. Its 3.7" screen has pixel dimensions of 854x480. Apart from that, the handset features a 5 MP camera, 8 GB internal memory, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and a 3.5 mm jack. Additionally, the onboard NFC chip will allow the device to communicate with the bundled SmartTags and other supported accessories.

The sola will hit the global markets by the end of June, and will be available in black, white and red hues. Sadly, the handset will run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) out of the box, and there's no specific date for an ICS update.
