OPPO Announces Its Ultra-Thin R5 In India For Rs 30,000

At 4.85 mm it is the thinnest Android smartphone available, and you can buy it.

 

OPPO wowed the tech world when it unveiled the world’s slimmest Android smartphone, the R5 about two months ago. Today the smartphone was unveiled in India and while it cannot be purchased right away, the company will open pre-bookings for the smartphone starting from the 1st of January 2015.

OPPO has indeed worked pretty hard on delivering a smartphone of this calibre at a mid-range price tag of Rs 29,990. There are a number of innovations available under the hood as well including a phase-shifting material that is made of metal, resin and other composite materials to keep things cool inside the ultra-thin body.

Synonymous with slim smartphones these days is the word “compromise”. Somehow OPPO seems to have found a way out for everything with R5. The hardware impresses (at least on paper) for now and OPPO seems to have included its Pure Image 2.0 tech inside as well. Lastly we also have the company’s VOOC rapid charging tech that compliments the 2000 mAh battery that will surely need a charge once in a while, unless OPPO has a couple of battery-saving tricks up its sleeve.

As for the specs of the OPPO R5:

  • We get a 5.2 inch Full HD AMOLED display with a pixel density of 423 PPI
  • Inside there is an octa-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 (64-bit) processor with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory
  • There is a 13 MP Sony Exmor IMX214 BSI sensor on the back while the front sensor is a 5 MP one with an 83 degree wide-angle lens
  • The device comes with the usual radios including 4G LTE/3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and Bluetooth 4.0
  • The handset runs Color OS 2.0 UX that is based on Android 4.4 KitKat and is powered by a 2000 mAh battery

The device certainly gives the Samsung Galaxy Alpha a run for its money, but will fall short when it comes to processing power. The handset will only be available in silver and will begin sales post the pre-booking phase which begins on the 1st of January, 2015.
