Microsoft To Unveil An New, Lighter Web Browser Alongside Windows 10
The browser is supposedly codenamed "Spartan" and will function more like Chrome or Firefox
Microsoft is apparently working on an all-new lightweight browser which could be set free inside Windows 10, leaving behind the infamous Internet Explorer. According to ZDNet's oft-right Mary Jo Foley, the new browser has been codenamed “Spartan” and isn't the rumored overhaul of Internet Explorer, but a whole new creation.
The new browser will supposedly be speedier, simpler and will retain Internet Explorer's rendering engine, but if earlier leaks are to be believed, will behave more like Chrome or Firefox. Given that Microsoft wants Windows 10 to run on everything from smartphones to televisions, it's highly possible that legacy work will get ditched.
The company hasn't confirmed anything as of yet, and it isn't clear if Spartan will be unveiled at the Windows 10 event scheduled to be held on January 21. There will be both mobile and desktop versions of the new browser, so it will have to facilitate multiple browsing experiences and different input methods.
The start of the new year is going to be crunch time over at Microsoft, as the company scrambles to keep up momentum surrounding its upcoming Windows 10 OS. The company has to do something that will interest users, and a sure-shot at achieving that would be to unveil its next generation web browser.
