Microsoft Launches Its Most Affordable 4G Offering For India, The Lumia 638
While 4G penetration in India is still a bit scanty, it is good to see smartphone makers launch smartphones with India specific bands.
Clearly 4G is not all that affordable and accessible to many in India, but its certainly the lack of smartphones that support it make things even worse for buyers who have a very limited choice. Well, Microsoft just made 4G speeds a lot more accessible to the common man, by delivering the all new Nokia Lumia 638, its most affordable 4G smartphone offering in India.
The newly launched device is not all that new actually. Its basically a Nokia Lumia 630 with a few upgrades. Externally the smartphone looks exactly like the Lumia 630, but inside there have been some adjustments and upgrades to both the RAM and the radio bands. The RAM capacity has been upped to 1 GB from the limited 512 MB on the 630, while the 638 gets 4G support with a barrage of connectivity options as listed below.
GSM: 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz
WCDMA: 2100 MHz, 1900 MHz, 850 MHz
LTE: 3, 7, 38, 40, 41, 39
LTE category: Cat 4 (150 Mbps downlink, 50 Mbps uplink)
TD-SCDMA: 34, 39
As for the rest of the specifications they remain similar to the Lumia 630:
- We get a 4.5 inch IPS ClearBlack LCD display with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels
- Inside we get some Snapdragon processing power from Qualcomm in the form of a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor coupled with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal memory
- The memory can also be expanded all the way up to 128 GB via the micro SD card slot
- There is a 5 MP autofocus camera on the back with no front facing unit
- The handset runs Windows Phone 8.1 with the Lumia Cyan update and includes a 1830 mAh battery unit to power it all
The handset will go on pre-order today (17th of December) on Amazon.in at the Microsoft Brand Store for Rs 8299 and will be available in black and white options only.
