Microsoft To Shut Down Marketplace For WM 6.x

Users given 9 May deadline to back-up their data.

Microsoft has sounded the death knell for the Windows Marketplace for Windows Mobile 6.x devices. An email sent by the company to all Windows Mobile 6.x device users mentions that the application market for these smartphones will be shut down, effective from 9 May. The ailing apps store started operation on 6 October 2009 with an initial 246 applications but never really took off, partly because of lackluster sales.

Microsoft has stated that after the deadline, users will no longer be able to browse, buy, or download applications directly on such phones using the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace application and service. All users have been advised to download and update apps before the date specified above. Applications and games installed on the devices will continue to work, but updates, if any, will only be possible from the developers or from third-party marketplaces. Users are therefore advised that resetting the phone or erasing data will make it impossible for them to get back the apps they had previously purchased and downloaded. Apparently, Microsoft has decided to focus their attention on the Windows Phone Marketplace, which definitely seems more promising.
