Google Will Let You Define Your Own Gender On Google+

Instead of using a long list of options like on Facebook, users will be able to enter pretty much anything in a free-form text box

Google has announced a new update for the profile editor on its social network Google+, introducing the 'custom' gender option. Rival Facebook made it easier for its gender non-conforming users to do the same earlier this year, but Google's approach is a little different.

While Facebook allows users to choose what they want displayed under the gender field from a long list of options, Google just shows a free-form text box allowing users to enter pretty much anything. In addition to this, Google+ will have a second field allowing users to select a personal pronoun.

Moreover, the custom settings to choose who can and who can't see a users gender settings remain intact, ensuring a similar level of privacy is maintained. The update hasn't gone live for all Google+ users just yet, but the company says they will over the next few days.

While the latest update marks just a minor tweak to Google+, it does go a long way in ensuring users are comfortable with their identities on Google+.
