Upcoming Google Translate Update To Include WordLens Image Translation

The conversation mode too will get a lot easier to use with auto-language detection

A few months ago, Google purchased the developers of WordLens, an app which translates text in other languages by just pointing a smartphone camera at it. The Internet giant's own language translation service will soon see the benefits of the acquisition, apart from its speech translator getting a lot more powerful.

According to Android Police, the updated version of Google Translate will live translate text from an image in a variety of languages. Further, the apps awesome conversation mode will get a lot more powerful with the update, and will automatically detect spoken language instead of having users manually select them.

The new Live Translate feature will function very similarly to the WordLens app, which you can download for free and take a look at right now. The report adds that the initial update will allow translation between English and French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish, but not between say French and Russian.

Google's conversation mode will be more like Star Trek's universal translator with the update, having the ability to actively listen for both the spoken languages. It will then automatically transcribe lets say an English speakers words into Spanish, and the Spanish speakers words into English, killing the pauses required in between.

Android Police adds that it isn't clear when Google may roll out the update for the Google Translate, but from the information they've got on their hands, the implementation of the new features does seem to be complete. Further, there's no way to get an early look at the new update, since the APK isn't available just yet.
