Xiaomi Launches Its $150 Air Purifier In China
The device will be exclusive to the Chinese market, but could eventually make its way elsewhere
Xiaomi may be best known for its smartphones, but if you follow the company more closely you'll realize they also make routers, blood pressure monitors, a tablet, smart TVs and now an air purifier.
The air purifier will (for now) be a China-only product, and will cost 899 RMB which translates to a sticker price of Rs 9,000. According to TechCrunch, Pre-orders for the device open today, but the device will go on sale on December 16. The report adds that there's no plan for a global launch of the device at this point of time.
According to the company the device's dual fan and quad air duct design allows it to produce up to 10,000 litres of clean air every minute. Moreover, the air purifier is capable of filtering out 99.99 percent of the dangerous PM2.5 air particles.
The Xiaomi air purifier comes with a companion app that lets you operate it, and also notifies you when the air filters need to be replaced. The filters themselves cost 199 RMB, which translates to Rs 2,000, but the company didn't reveal any details about how often they would need replacing.
Xiaomi has grown into the largest smartphone vendor in China and is among the top five vendors globally, but the company is finding new avenues to grow its business. While the products are widely different, the sales model followed by Xiaomi is exactly the same, calling for no traditional advertising, which saves massive costs.
The company is also actively investing in a range of hardware companies, including US startup Misfit most recently. For all the criticism the company draws for its smartphones resembling Apple devices, looking at its business plan, it seems like Xiaomi wants to be the next Samsung.
