Rumour: Next iPhone To Deliver DSLR Quality Images With Dual-Lens System

Will apparently be Apple’s biggest leap in terms of iPhone camera technology.

John Gruber (The Talk Show) on the usual podcast had a bit more to speak about than the usual in a recent episode. He mentioned in the podcast that Apple was apparently working on some major camera improvements for its next iPhone.

“The specific thing I heard is that next years camera might be the biggest camera jump ever. I don't even know what sense this makes, but I've heard that it's some kind of weird two-lens system where the back camera uses two lenses and it somehow takes it up into DSLR quality imagery.”

Gruber mentions that he heard some insiders speak about what would be Apple’s biggest jump in camera technology ever. Apple will apparently use a dual lens set up similar to what we have on the HTC One M8, but with both lenses being used to record the image. The recorded data will then be combined with the system selecting the best pixels resulting in top notch DSLR-level quality imagery.

Talking about DSLR-quality imagery, with such optics, the iPhone 7 may be able to compete with the ageing Nokia Lumia 1020's PureView tech after all. Talking about PureView, it was indeed not too long ago that PureView Senior Lumia engineer Ari Partinen announced on twitter that he was joining Apple. So this could indeed be Microsoft’s loss and Apple’s big gain.
