Google Search And Keyboard Get A Material Design Update
Apart from the Material Design influence, there are also some new features included in the updated apps.
Google has been on a busy schedule of updating all its apps to the new Material Design guidelines that it introduced with Android Lollipop. Well, after updating most of them, it was pretty clear that it would eventually update its Search and Keyboard apps as well. Those very updates have finally begun rolling out today.
While we did have a glimpse of what Google search would look like on the Chrome browser, we clearly knew that Google would implement the same Material Design elements on its Search app for Android pretty soon. The new update does just that.
There are new animations and transitions all over the place. Everything is now neat and concise and the “Ok Google” voice command works even when your smartphone is switched off. This feature according to Google is limited to just the Nexus 6, 9 and the Samsung GALAXY Note 4 devices.
Reminders have also gotten smarter, meaning that Google will now sniff through your emails as well and remind you when (it thinks) you have ignored an important email from the Gmail app. The reminder then shows up as a card on your Google Now page.
Search will now find what you need through the apps installed on your device as well. So searching for hotels in Mumbai can be as easy as, “Ok Google, search TripAdvisor for hotels in Mumbai”. It is pretty interesting to see how Google will implement this feature in the future (rather how many apps will be supported), but for now Search only supports Tumblr, TripAdvisor, Trulia and YouTube.
As for the Google Keyboard, its pretty much what we had expected. There are two new Material Design themes (along with the older holo ones as well) and all the transitions and keyboard pop-ups seem to have gotten smoother. There are now phrase gestures, meaning that you can slide to the space key to add a space while typing a complete sentence.
As always both of these apps are being rolled out gradually, but you could head to the Source 2 link below to download the Google Keyboard apk and install it manually.
