LG Plans Bendable Smartphones By 2015; Rollable TVs To Follow
A lot of the company's future plans seem to be riding on its flexible plastic OLED display technology
Over the years LG has been been making massive investments in developing future display technologies, and it seems that the future is almost here. The company recently shared its innovation roadmap, with smartphones sporting bendable displays lined up for launch in 2015, and devices with rollable displays coming in 2017.
LG is betting big on its Plastic OLED (or P-OLED) display technology to revolutionize the space, with the promise of making devices flexible, folable and rollable. The first devices from the Korean mark to utilize the technology were the G Flex smartphone, and the recently launched circular display touting G Watch R.
According to LG, the P-OLED displays will be used in bendable smartphones in 2015, followed by bendable tablets emerging some time between 2015 and 2016. While that's great, it's only scratching the surface of what the company plans to do with the technology, claiming that the future is all about rollable displays.
P-OLED technology won't be restricted to just smartphones and wearables either, as the company plans to bring the bendable display technology to notebooks, rollable TVs and curved infotainment screens in cars by 2017. With LG recently gaining some traction in the smartphone market, it's a great time for them to shake things up a bit.
