Tesla Delays The Roll-Out Of Its Model X SUV Yet Again
While there's still no tentative date of release, don't expect the Model X to launch before the second half of 2014
American all-electric carmaker Tesla has revealed that it's highly anticipated Model X SUV will be delayed yet again. The vehicle was first expected to hit roads by 2013, then 2014 and again in early 2015, but the company has now revealed that the Model X won't go into production until the second half of next year.
In an investors call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that the latest delay is caused due to testing and validation procedures, and something on the lines of he won't allow a half-finished product out the door. The powertrain for the Model X is nearing the end of its development, thanks to the know-how gained in making the dual-motor Model S.
Musk accepted criticism for the multiple delays the Model X has faced, and added that the move would hurt the company in the short term but benefit it in the long run, by having a product that will “delight customers”.
As explained, the problem the company is currently facing is producing test batches of the Model X, as it's often hard to find issues when manufacturing just a few cars. "Making one of something is quite easy," said Musk, adding that a problem won't crop up until you start manufacturing things in larger numbers.
Tesla needs to put the Model X into production so all the flaws can make themselves known, and given manufacturing constraints, that's not possible until later next year. While Musk's attention to detail will surely win him some praise, we can't help but think people who've already paid the registration fee are going to be quite angry.
