Google Maps Now Updated With The Slick New Material Design UX

Update brings some goodies for the US and International markets as well.

 

It had to happen and boy it looks good! Google Maps has finally rolled out the much needed Material Design update, that it has been working on for months. Good news is, that apart from all those fancy transitions that you get with the Material Design transformation, we also get some handy new features, that are locked by region.

The UX certainly looks fresh and there are Material Design influences all over the place. From the “get directions” button to the speech entry button along with a new “place info” page with all those juicy transitions, they have all been refreshed. Also included is the new icon to keep up with the rest of Google’s apps.

While the UX has got a massive upgrade, we guess all those speedy transitions will appear only when we see some Lollipop on our devices. But for now Google has added a few more features as well.

Those in the US, will now be able to book their restaurant tables straight from the Google Maps app (bye bye Zomato). Somehow we wished it connected with Zomato (international service) instead of the OpenTable (US only) app to get the same done. Then again, Zomato currently does not allow for online table bookings as of now.

Next up is the ability to check up Uber’s pickup time if you have navigated to a particular destination. The service will actually let you know when you can take an Uber cab and even let you know about the price depending on where you are navigating to. This feature according to Google will be available where ever Uber is available. Do remember to update your Uber app though.

We are guessing that there is still a lot to come since Android Lollipop has not arrived on most smartphones (including the Nexus devices) yet. Hopefully the rest of the Android devs are as interested in Material Design as Google is and go ahead with the transformation.
