Low On Internal Memory? Lollipop Has Got You Covered
Those hanging on to their smartphone with just a GB of room to spare, can finally breathe a sigh of relief thanks to big G.
Since the final Android source code has just been released, there are indeed a ton of minor changes that Google has implemented in Android Lollipop. Obviously not all of these would be highlighted in Android Lollipop’s list of features, but there are a some, like full directory access on micro SD cards, that will make both users and developers smile.
Why wouldn’t they. While most flagship smartphones these days come with at least 16 GB of internal memory, there are quite a few mid-range devices that have fallen prey to a combination of Android KitKat and 8 GB of storage space. If you happen to own a Samsung GALAXY K Zoom you would indeed understand what is happening here. The device comes with 8 GB of internal memory. But that practically makes no sense if you love to play high end games because TouchWiz itself utilizes 3.5 GB out of that leaving users with just 3.5 GB to spare for apps, games and even that massive “miscellaneous” cache that can go into gigabytes if not cleared.
Thankfully Google has been listening to the poor victims of low internal memory and has delivered Android Lollipop with enhanced support and access to micro SD card. With directory access to either a single folder or the entire external SD card. Apps can now be installed on the memory cards with just a one time user access permission during the installation process.
Hopefully devs who develop large games and apps that need access to the SD card for additional space, take up the opportunity and finally move their installations off the main memory of Android devices, releasing all of that precious internal storage and speeding up smartphones in the process.
