Google's 'Copresence' Is A Cross-Platform Competitor For Apple's AirDrop
The new feature will supposedly allow contactless file-sharing between Android and even iOS devices
Google supposedly has a new service in the works that will allow users of Android devices to seamlessly share media with others nearby, even those using devices running on iOS. According to Android Police (who unearthed the feature), Copresence as it is called and will use location info or Bluetooth to authenticate the devices based on proximity.
The new feature will use Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi direct to shoot data back and forth between two devices, allowing users to share maps, music, photos, websites and more. The report added that Copresence could be strongly integrated with Google's Hangouts chat app, based on the graphic similarities Android Police unearthed.
Right now the Android Beam feature present for Google powered devices requires contact list approval in order to share data between two devices. Copresence on the other hand will work more like Apple's AirDrop, which allows sharing media between nearby iOS devices, but won't be restricted to just its own ecosystem.
Apple has made the first move to integrate devices running iOS and OS X with Continuity, but again it's an Apple-only affair. It is yet to be seen how deep the integrations Google's new Copresence feature offers, which sounds like a very useful feature, especially since it isn't locked only to the Google ecosystem.
According to Android Police, Google will debut Copresence in the coming weeks, so it won't be long before we should be able to get our hands on it. The news comes at a time when the Internet search giant is all-set to unveil Android 5.0 Lollipop, one of the biggest transformations the mobile OS has ever undergone.
