Xiaomi To Speak To The IAF About Its Smartphone Ban Note

The company should be worried as this would directly affect the sales of its smartphones in the country.

If you have been reading the news in the past few days, you will already know that Xiaomi is under fire for transferring user data to some remote servers in China. There was a note that many agencies were raving about (that is yet to be confirmed) from the Indian Air Force (IAF) that has asked those who are part of it to desist from using Xiaomi’s smartphones especially the Redmi 1S model. The note also went on to say that Xiaomi Redmi 1S phone was sending data, including the user's IMEI, phone number, and phone numbers of contacts added to the phone book, to a remote server. This (if it turns out to be true) is a big problem considering that these individuals are a part of the country’s security forces and everyone would be at risk.

Xiaomi’s VP Hugo Barra is aware of the issue and is planning to reach out to authorities as he mentioned in a offical statement:

"We are trying to get to the bottom of this. So far, we have not heard anything from the IAF or any other authorities and have only read media reports. We will reach out to authorities and engage with them to address any concerns that they might have,"

The note that explicitly asks those working in the IAF to stop using Xiaomi smartphones was apparently approved by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) as well.

The Chinese smartphone maker is already moving its servers outside the country to places like the US and Singapore. The user data belonging to users outside the country will be shifted to the above mentioned places while users from China will have their data located in China only. This will save the company from legal implications that have slowly begun showing its ugly face, more so because Xiaomi has been selling a lot of smartphones lately thanks to their smart pricing.
