Barra Ropes In Ex-Google Man Jai Mani As Xiaomi's India Product Lead

Mani comes in at a time when the company is looking to setup an R&D center in the country

Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi has appointed former Google executive Jai Mani as the lead product manager for its India operations. The announcement comes from the company's vice president Hugo Barra, an ex-Google man himself, in a Facebook post stating that Mani has relocated from San Francisco to Bangalore.

Mani worked at Google as a Google Play Strategy and Analytics associate for nearly two and a half years. He helped Barra with demos at the Google I/O conference in 2013 and was also seen at the Nexus phone launches. According to Mani's Linkedin account, he last served as a project manager and co-founder of a startup.

Xiaomi's Indian operations are currently headed by Manu Kumar Jain, who was the co-founder of e-commerce player Jabong. Mani's entry into the company comes at a time when Xiaomi is looking to expand its presence in the country, and has plans to setup an R&D center in Bangalore.

Barra famously stated that Xiaomi wanted to have an actual R&D center in India with actual engineering teams, designers, product managers and software engineers, building features for Indian users. Mani's appointment as lead product manager comes exactly one year after Barra made his move to Xiaomi, perfectly timed to his first anniversary.
