MWC 2012: Mozilla Demonstrates Smartphone OS
Video shows Boot2Gecko running smoothly.
As promised earlier, Mozilla presented its smartphone OS Boot2Gecko at the Mobile World Congress 2012 (MWC). The company seems to be heading in the right direction. In the demonstration video, Boot2Gecko seems to run smoothly, with basic smartphone functions being shown. You can also see that a few games are being played, along with web browsing, making calls, playing videos, and use of Google Maps. For an OS still under development, it looks considerably polished.
Incidentally, the mobile phone that is being used is a modified version of the Samsung GALAXY S II, because apparently there is still no hardware partner for this project. However, mobile network operator Telefonica has pledged to provide low-cost handsets with this OS for emerging markets. Deutsche Telekom's Innovation Labs will also offer a helping hand. However, the browser maker is yet to get a hardware partner, without whom a Boot2Gecko phone seems to be a distant reality. From what can be seen at present though, I reckon that when launched, this new mobile OS will give its competitors a run for their money.
