Google Outs Emulator To Help Developers Build 64-Bit Apps

Hardware manufacturers have been preparing for it, now app developers can jump in too

Google's next major Android update will by far be the most thorough change in the software's history, but from a hardware perspective, support for 64-bit chips is the root of major excitement. Manufacturers have been preparing for Android's jump to 64-bit architecture for some time, but now app developers can jump in too.

Google has announced the release of a x86 64-bit Android L developer preview emulator image, that will allow building of 64-bit apps for Android. Doing so will enable apps to access increased addressable memory space, a larger number of registers, and new instruction sets.

Not all devs will have to go in for rebuilds, as Google says apps built in Java will automatically gain the above mentioned benefits. However, apps built in other languages will have to be recompiled to take advantage of the improvements that come along with the 64-bit release.
