Google+ Is Here To Stay, Says The New Guy Running It

Now that Google isn't forcing us to sign up for a Google+ account, maybe we'll actually try it

 

Google for the past few months has seemed to be scaling back its focus on Google+, to the extent that questions of the company shutting the service have been raised. However, the company's new head of social media Dave Besbris, rubished the rumors by saying the team and service aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

“We’re the largest we’ve ever been,” said Besbris, in an interview with Re/Code. "We’re actually very happy with the progress of Google+, [Larry Page] said this at the time that Vic transitioned that he’s going to continue working on building this stuff, that he’s very happy with it. The company is behind it."

While Besbris didn't explicitly talk about Google's recent move to allow users to opt out of Google+ when signing up for another service, his idea of people using the service only when they really wanted to, makes sense. "I only want people to use the software when they want to use the software," he said.

Since the exit of Vic Gundotra, Google has gone on to decouple many of its other services from Google+, and the trend only seems to be growing. While Google+ may remain, it's clear that the company is no longer placing it at the center of its project strategy, touting the service to be everyone's face on the Internet.

It isn't clear whether Google gave into the wave of negative publicity that came along with forcing people to sing up for a Google+ account, or the ploy didn't translate into active users on the social network. The move seems to be a parody of Facebook's new strategy of dividing its 'Big Blue' app into smaller, more useful bits.
