Good Bye Orkut, But We Will Not Miss You!

It was rather ironic to see Orkut trending on Facebook

 

For a whole generation, who were one of the first to get into the social network, the name of Orkut will make them nostalgic. From tomorrow, it will be found hidden in the pages of history as Google had announced that it will be shutting it down.

It was rather ironic that Orkut was trending both on Facebook and Twitter, more so in the case of the former. Even before world had seen Facebook, it was Orkut that had proved to be the favourite dwelling point of youngsters, who were getting warmed up to the idea of social network.

Despite being a decade old and one of the first to be in the segment, the jinx with Google’s social network started with the onslaught of Facebook.

"Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut's growth, we've decided to bid Orkut farewell," Google said in a post on the Orkut blog.

It is true that there is a sense of sadness, but it is very unlikely that very few would miss Orkut considering many would have logged into it after many years when the closure of Orkut was announced. 

Orkut was launched in 2004, the same year when Facebook was founded. Facebook is now the world`s largest social network with 1.28 billion users.

Google launched its Google+ social network in 2011 and has been slowly weaving it into other services. While Google+ was positioned to compete with Facebook in the beginning, over the last few years, it has established Google+ as a unified "user identity" system.

In 2010, Facebook overtook Orkut as the top social networking site in India with 20.9 million visitors in July that year compared to Orkut`s 16 percent growth with 19.9 million visitors, according to research firm comScore.

Google said it would preserve an archive of all Orkut communities that will be available from September 30.

How you can export a photo album from Orkut to Google+:

Orkut users who also have a Google+ account can export their photo albums to Google+.

1. Sign into your Google+ account.

2. Go to http://www.orkut.com/AlbumsExport.

3. Click each album you want to export or Select all.

4. Click Import selected.

You can also save your Orkut profile, scraps, testimonials, and community posts to your computer using Google Takeout
