Samsung GALAXY A5 (SM-A500F) Images Surface; Shows NMT Tech

The handset as reported will not be made out of metal, but something that “feels” like it.

The first images of the Samsung GALAXY SM-A500F have finally surfaced. The handset was earlier pegged as the cheaper sibling of the premium GALAXY Alpha and now that we have seen it, kind of looks similar to it as well.

SamMobile has in fact revealed that the handset will be called GALAXY A5. It also says that while earlier rumours did point to device being made out of metal, the A5 will actually sport a material that feels like metal but is anything but that.

From the images we can clearly see that the handset sports a uni body design with only separate part being the display on the front. The metal around the frame gleams through the bevelled edges and indeed seems like the device does sport a metal frame because of the breaks in the frame for the antenna.

Our guesses point to the new nano moulding technology (NMT) that is a fusion of plastic and metal and was first seen on the leaked images of the ZTE Grand S. The metal and plastic are supposedly injected together into the mould, resulting into a crystalline state which can then be chamfered along the edges.

Also leaked out were the specs that seem to fall perfectly in line with the previous leaks that came from TENAA:

  • A 5 inch Super AMOLED touch screen display sporting a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels
  • 1.2 GHz quad-core chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC with 2 GB of RAM
  • There’s 16 GB of internal memory available along with micro SD memory card expansion
  • A 13 MP camera up front, with a 5 MP front-facer
  • All powered by a 2330 mAh non-removable battery

So it seems that Samsung is actually preparing a mid-range device with quality construction. While the GALAXY Alpha has yet to hit store shelves, Samsung is indeed changing its strategy from full-blown hardware to a combination of mid-range hardware with premium design. Has Samsung finally found the sweet spot with smartphones? We will know when the A5 launches.
