KitKat Users Now Make Up 21% Of The Android Family
While it has taken some time, the adoption rate of Android KitKat is certainly impressive.
Google has just outed Android distribution numbers, and we were pleasantly surprised to find that over 20.9% of its devices are now running on KitKat. Based on usage data gathered in early August, there's clearly a healthy improvement over the 17.9 percent in July and a huge jump from the 14.9 percent in June.
The company however hasn't explained the source of this steady growth, but Engadget explains it could be because of the success of devices like LG's G3 and Samsung's Tab S, and also older devices receiving updates. The growth of KitKat has come at the expense of the declining share of older releases, but that's a given.
Android 4.0.3 and 4.0.4, simply known as Ice Cream Sandwich has a share of a little above 10 percent, and is expected to fall into the single digits very soon. Google's most widely used Android build however continued to be Jelly Bean 4.1.x, which still runs on over 26 percent of its devices.
Whether KitKat will ever hold the majority share is sort of becoming irrelevant, given that Google's Android L is soon to be released. Given the scale of change Android L is bringing in to the platform, we wouldn't be surprised if its adoption rate sky rockets, and retains growth for much longer than KitKat.
