Secure Blackphone Gets Rooted In 5 Minutes At BlackHat Security Conference
Feeling insecure about your Android smartphone now?
Android users clearly aren’t too worried as Android security is not something most users are worried about -- its just the specs. At the recent BlackHat Security Conference, a Justin Case from @TeamAndIRC managed to root what is supposed to be the most secure Android phone to date in 5 minutes.
To add fuel to the fire, Justin managed to achieve root even without unlocking the bootloader, meaning that the team at Blackphone indeed has a lot to work on. Of course the exploit is now patched while the remainder is available only upon the user’s consent. It may be laughable, especially for a company that kept mocking BlackBerry a number of times. But it seems like Blackphone will have to just shut up and patch things for now.
It is indeed a growing problem with Android but you cannot blame users as they readily agree to the software’s open source nature when they buy a device. Still then it is a bit disturbing to know how easy it was to step into such a secure device, running Android’s latest and greatest KitKat software.
