Microsoft Could Do Away With The Charms Bar In Windows Treshold

The iconic UI feature made its debut with Windows 8, and is great if you're using touch, but kills you if you're on a regular PC.

 

Microsoft is treating its Windows desktop software to a slew of changes, and a new report suggests that the company could axe the Charms Bar in the next big release. The UI element has been an iconic, if not infamous, addition that made its debut with Windows 8, offering quick access to search and the settings menu.

The Charms Bar is the disappearing menu that shows up on the right side of the desktop, but could be done away with once Windows Treshold starts rolling out. According to ZDNet's Mary J Foley, the Charm bar will be absent from both Windows PCs as well as tablets, countering an earlier report suggesting it will be missing only on desktops.

The love-or-hate relationship users have with the Charm Bar is mostly down to whether they're using touch enabled devices or not. It's a great easy way to access settings when using a touch-enabled PC, but becomes a pain by popping up every time a user flicks the mouse cursor to the corner of the screen.

Despite losing the Charms Bar, Windows will retain some of the functionality it currently adds by bits of it being incorporated into the title bar for Windows 8 apps. However, if true, it will be up to app developers to add such functions if they want their users to get social.

Microsoft is expected to preview Windows Treshold sometime this fall, which should shed some light on the major changes. It is to be seen if Windows will become 'Charmless' but the other big addition expected is the return of the iconic Start Menu.
