Samsung’s Three-Sided Display Finally Enters Production
The sad part is that the display will be available in limited numbers only.
According to the Korean media, Samsung has finally begun the manufacturing process for the much-rumoured three-sided YOUM display that is said to make a debut with its upcoming GALAXY Note 4 handset. Reports also point to the display being available in limited numbers only, which falls in line with past rumours about Samsung announcing two variants of the GALAXY Note 4.
The three-sided YOUM display will clearly not be a gimmick and will in all probability be used to unlock the handset with the case on, to read scrolling notifications as demoed at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. As for the display, insiders say that it is indeed a tough one to build, being made out of a plastic substrate. This is why production numbers are indeed said to be low, which is why we guess it may launch in Samsung’s home market initially until production ramps up.
The last time we heard of a plastic substrate display, was in our review of the LG G Flex. The display was a P-OLED one and was clearly a disaster (both at low and high brightness settings) apart form sporting bendable qualities that the handset was known for. Hopefully Samsung has found a work around for this and brought the price down as well. With LG G Flex clearly costing the earth and the sky, we hope that Samsung’s Note 4 sticks with the rest of the flagships as the company’s second quarter sales performance also saw a big slump.
