Microsoft To Give Away Windows 9 For Free To XP & Vista Users?

Given the sheer number of users still stuck on XP, it wouldn't be wild on the part of Microsoft to upgrade them for free.

Word has it that Microsoft could go as far as giving users of Windows 7, Vista and XP a free upgrade to its upcoming Windows 9 software when it launches sometime next year. The move could be aimed at keeping users of older platforms within the Windows environment, rather than having them move to Google Chrome or Apple's OS X.

ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley cites rumours of Microsoft cutting some sort of a deal with users of its older operating systems, in a blog post. She goes on to say that it could very well be in the form of a free upgrade, that could entice users to stick on with Windows.

Microsoft has made similar moves in the past in order to kickstart adoption of its latest operating system. Also given the insanely large number of users still stuck on Windows XP, a freebie might be the only thing that gets them to upgrade.

The company is supposedly all-set to roll out the Windows 8.1 Update 2 on August 12 as part of its Patch Tuesday program. The update is expected to be a minor one, bringing in a few design changes, but will not be a major redesign.

Treshold, being referred to as Windows 9, is the current focus at Microsoft, with the company looking to add many new features to the OS. The most notable of those changes is expected to be the return of the iconic Start Menu, screenshots of which have been doing the rounds on the Internet over the past few months.
