Microsoft’s Cortana Is Coming To India With WP 8.1 Update 1

Update 1 will include live folders, enhanced privacy and much more.

Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore finally revealed to the world, what is in store with the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 update 1 (GDR 1). This came across as a post from the VP of Windows Phone Program Management via the official Windows Phone Blog. The post thoroughly describes what Microsoft has planned to add to the Windows Phone platform and what improvements its brings (which may not be too many) along with its bigger plans for Cortana.

With Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1, Cortana will be available in more countries. China and the UK will be the next two countries where Cortana will be available as a beta, with Canada, India and Australia getting an Alpha version of the same.

The Chinese version of Cortana as Belfiore describes it will come with her own unique features which will not be available elsewhere. The UI will look a bit different as well, Cortana will actually get a face (complete with eyes) all of which will be animated to display different expressions and emotions. The services available will also vary in China. air quality, local TV show results will all be accessible via Cortana.

Similarly for the UK, English Premier league scores will be accessible via the same with a few more local additions. As for the alpha version in India, it will not be localized with Indian languages but users will have to choose between US English or UK English to operate the same.

Cortana aside, Update 1 will also introduce Live Folders. You will soon be able to drag and drop Live Tiles over the one another to form folders and you will be able to check updates inside them as well. Need to edit them? Simply tap on them to expand. Clearly this fits the bill for bigger displays allowing you to see more by doing less.

The Xbox Music and Store will also be seeing some minor improvements and will finally be able to display something more than just the icon. There are number of other security improvements and features that have been added to the mix as well.

If you were wondering when will the update be hitting your handset? Well, for those on the Preview for Developers, it will be a week from now. For those who are on on the commercial version of the software that came with your Windows Phone, its still a couple of months away.
