Google Confirms Android Wear Will Support Custom Watch Faces

Doesn't really come as a surprise, but it's good to finally know.

 

Android has always been know for being heavily customisable, so it didn't come as a shock when Google announced its Android Wear platform will support watch faces from third-party developers. There are already a few options available for download on the Play Store, but they somehow don't work as they're supposed to.

The company said its teams are hard at work developing a custom watch face API, urging developers to hold out for a little longer. The news was made public on a Google+ post by Developer Advocate, Wayne Piekarski, who said the upcoming API will be as simple as possible for developers to make all-round great watch faces.

"Customization has helped Android thrive, and the same will be true for Android Wear," he wrote. The new API will not only let developers build good-looking watch faces, but also ones that do not drain the battery and blend in the the watch's card-based UI.

For the perfect looking Android Wear device however, you could have to wait a little longer. Google has said that the basic tools for developing watch faces will be available soon, but the entire API won't be available until the release of Android L later this year.
