Yahoo! India Launches Bengali Portal
Ties up with ABP for its fourth regional language offering.
Yahoo! India has joined forces with Anandabazar Patrika (ABP) to offer Bengali content to its readers. After coming out with regional offerings in Hindi, Tamil, and Marathi, the Bengali portal will publish global politics, sports, and entertainment news, alongside local stories from Kolkata. The website will also feature articles from ABP's supplements including Pustak Porichoy (book review), Kolkatar Korcha (snippets from Kolkata), Baracharcha (celebrity interviews), Natyo Samalochana (theatre review), Probondho (essays), and weekend specials.
The ICube report by IAMAI, surveyed rural internet users across seven states and found that 46% of them access music, videos, and images through the the internet, whereas 38% use it for email and communication. Furthermore, 29% access it for general information and 27% seek educational content. Considering how internet userbase is growing rapidly in India, content in native languages will definitely find many takers.
