Samsung To Launch High-End Galaxy Alpha To Take On The iPhone 6

The device will likely sport a metal chassis and sounds a lot like the rumoured Galaxy F and Galaxy S5 Prime.

Korean electronics giant Samsung is planning to launch a new high-end Galaxy smartphone in order to take on the upcoming Apple iPhone models. It is rumoured that the device may be launched as early as next month and is dubbed 'Galaxy Alpha' according to Korean publication ETNews (not translated).

According to the report Samsung is working on a new high-end smartphone model that will sit above its Galaxy S5 flagship. The company is planning to have the device on store shelves even before Apple has a chance to announce the iPhone 6, citing unnamed sources that claim to have knowledge of the developments.

Reports of a higher end version of the Galaxy S5 have been doing rounds soon after Samsung launched the flagship device back in April. The 'Alpha' monicker seems to be latest name for a device that has earlier been dubbed the Galaxy S5 Prime and Galaxy F.

It is claimed that the Galaxy Alpha will sport a metal chassis, ditching the plastic construction of the current S5 that has been attacked by the media as well as the public. ETNews even cites a source saying that Samsung is looking to exploit the gap between its Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note with the new device.

Given that Apple is expected to roll out two variants of its iPhone this time around, Samsung too could be looking to counter the move with a simultaneous roll-out of a premium Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 4. The report states an August launch for the Galaxy Alpha, but we wouldn't rule out a dual launch at IFA 2014 in September.

It seems as though Samsung is using a reversed strategy of what its Taiwanese rival HTC has done with its flagship One. The launch of the metal-bodied One (M8) was followed by the more affordable One (E8) which retained most of the firepower but ditched the premium feel.

Samsung has already been dropping the price of the Galaxy S5 in markets like India, which now competes with the One (E8) rather than the One (M8). We wouldn't be surprised to see a new metal-bodied device from the company that would take on HTC's flagship, which priced close to Rs 50,000.
