Windows Phone 8.1 GDR 1 Update Is Almost Ready For Testing

While Microsoft has yet to roll out Windows Phone 8.1, the team with its accelerated schedule is already ready with the next version

While millions of Windows Phone owners, apart from Lumia 630 and 930, are waiting to receive the Windows Phone 8.1 (WP 8.1) updates, the team at Microsoft is literally way ahead of their schedule. Apparently the Consumer Experience team say that they will in all probability wrap up the GDR 1 update next week.

That does not mean that the next update of Windows Phone is ready for your smartphone. There is a long process of testing before the update will eventually reach your Windows Phone device. Once the update clears the program managers, it will head to Microsoft’s OEM and other carrier partners. Only after it clears that post edits, will it eventually be announced and then released a few months down the line. Indeed the process is a lot less complex compared to what OEMs have to deal with when it comes to Android updates thanks to all the customizations and skinning.

As for the next update we have no clue what's headed our way in the Windows Phone space. We definitely cannot expect something big as it just an update and not a version change. So far there have been rumours about a folder creation ability and an exploded view for certain native elements. Moreover, there are barely any apps, where devs will actually take the trouble to update them over their iOS and Android counterparts.

Any ways if you do want to see the new update, you will have to be on the developer preview of Windows Phone. But watch out for those bugs!
