Samsung Eats Into Apple’s Market Share In Europe

Apple iPhone users are apparently fed up of the smaller display and are making the switch to the S5.

Kantar, the Insight and Consultancy arm of WPP plc has released a report showing that 26 percent of British GALAXY S5 buyers have made the switch from an iPhone. Last year apparently the figure was just 12 percent, but back then it was the GALAXY S4, which clearly bought nothing new to the smart phone game and was simply an upgrade to the GALAXY S3.

Kantar’s data also shows that 17 percent of buyers in Europe made the switch from an iPhone with Germany holding the fort for Android. 80 percent of German mobile phone buyers selected an Android device with just 12 percent buying an iPhone by the end of May 2014.

Clearly, Apple needs to launch an iPhone with a bigger screen (which it is planning -- two versions in fact) in order to gain its market share back in Europe. Meanwhile in the US, the figure was just 8 percent, indicating that most buyers of the GALAXY S5 have probably shifted from a feature phone or an existing Android one.

Samsung’s GALAXY S5 was not a show-stopper when it was announced back at the Mobile Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year. While fans expected a Quad HD display, Samsung delivered a heart rate monitor plugging in the health angle, which somehow managed to drive sales. Still, LG seems to be a better success even though its almost four months late to the game.
