Samsung Unveils Four KitKat-Powered Budget Galaxy Devices

The Korean giant suddenly seems to be very interested in the budget end of the smartphone market.

 

Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung has unveiled its new range of budget Galaxy devices, consisting of the Galaxy Core II, Galaxy Star 2, Galaxy Ace 4, and Galaxy Young 2. The company hasn't yet revealed details of the pricing or availability of the four devices, but clearly mentions it is targeted at the low-cost market.

According to a post on Samsung's official blog, all the new Galaxy devices will run on Android 4.4 KitKat, skinned company's propitiatory TouchWiz UI right out of the box. Further, three of the four devices feature dual SIM support, while the Galaxy Ace 4 is the only single SIM device, but comes with the option of 4G LTE connectivity.

Galaxy Core II

The Galaxy Core II features a 4.5-inch WVGA display (480x800 pixels) and is powered by a quad-core 1.2GHz processor coupled to 768MB of RAM. On board storage stands at just 4GB, but can be expanded to a maximum of 64GB via a microSD card. A 5MP autofocus camera with an LED flash are mounted at the rear, while the front gets a VGA snapper. The devices is powered by a 2,000mAh battery and supports Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth 4.0.

Galaxy Ace 4

The Galaxy Ace 4 comes in two variants – 4G LTE or 3G – each with slightly different specifications. Both devices feature a 4-inch WVGA display, a 5MP rear camera and a VGA front facing shooter. That's where the similarities end.

The LTE variant is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor coupled to 1GB of RAM and is powered by a 1,800mAh battery. The 3G variant on the other hand makes do with a 1GHz dual core processor, 512MB of RAM and a smaller 1,500mAh battery.

Samsung Young 2

The Samsung Galaxy Young 2 features a 3.5-inch HVGA (320x480 pixels) and is powered by a 1GHz single-core processor coupled with 512MB of RAM. The device also comes with a 3MP rear camera and 4GB of internal storage, which can be expanded to 32GB via a microSD card. Connectivity options include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and all that hardware is powered by a 1,300mAh battery.

Galaxy Star 2

The Galaxy Star 2 features a 3.5-inch HVGA (320x480 pixels) and is powered by a 1GHz single-core processor alongside 512MB of RAM. A 2MP rear camera, 4GB of onboard storage which is expandable to a max of 32GB via a microSD card and a 1,300mAh battery make up the main specifications. Unlike the Young 2 the device is not compatible with 3G networks.

Samsung once again seems to be showing more interest in the budget end of the market, which is currently dominated by devices running much older versions of Android. While the hardware may be comparable to offerings from other manufacturers, the success of these devices literally boils down to their price.
