Microsoft: Nokia X, X+ And XL Will Not Get X2 Firmware

The company seems to have a reputation for dumping older devices and now its all set to do it again.

Microsoft has announced that the Nokia X range which was launched just a few months ago will not be upgraded to the latest Nokia X software platform 2.0. The range includes the Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL handsets, which have just started selling in the Indian subcontinent.

The company blames the hardware limitations as the reason for not pushing the latest software update to the recently launched handsets.

So what is missing in the older (recent) Nokia X range? Its that glossy new home button that makes navigation easier and also the presence of 1 GB RAM, which was an issue with the Nokia X, X+ and XL and its shows in the constantly stuttering UI. The older handsets came with just 512 MB / 768 MB of RAM which would be OK for a Windows Phone device, but definitely less for a device running RAM hungry Android apps.

Yannis Paniaras, Head of the Mobile Phones UX Design Studio at Microsoft in Beijing commented: "Because of the necessary hardware upgrades, the Nokia X software platform 2.0 won’t be available on Nokia X, Nokia X+ or Nokia XL. However, more updates will be coming to further improve the experience of those devices in the coming months,”

The biggest question here is, why didn't Microsoft think about all of this before launching the platform? Looks like Microsoft is taking the Samsung route, where you have to buy a newer handset to get the latest version of TouchWiz.

Microsoft is known for taking such calls, as the company had done the same when Windows Phone shifted from version 7 to 8. The company literally abandoned all the older handsets purchased by customers, who actually helped the Windows Phone platform grow.
