Mahindra May Use Tesla's Patent-Free Electric Car Technology

Now that Tesla has made its patents public, Mahindra will look at ways to benefit from the technology.

Indian auto giant Mahindra & Mahindra, country's only manufacturer of electric cars, has said that it will review the applicability of patents made public by Tesla Motors for use in its own products. Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles, a part of the Mahindra Group is currently developing a slew of electric cars, including an electric sports car dubbed the Halo. The concept model was showcased at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo and is expected to roll-off the production lines within the next three years.

“We have not yet reviewed the patents available. (We) will have to determine the applicability to our EV products,” said Pawan Goenka, President of Mahindra's automotive sector, according to a Livemint report.

Earlier this month, Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Tesla Motors announced that patents owned by the company were being made free for anyone looking to build EVs. He added that Tesla will “not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology. ”
